  • Who Really is Better?

Christians are often overly judgmental and condemning towards others. They know they shouldn't be because their Holy Book and Lord tells them so. Even so, they often are and as a result are branded hypocrites because of it.

Many who call themselves atheists are equally over the top when it comes to judging others and being condemning. They know they shouldn't because they tell Christians not to. Atheists are hypocrites too.

So there really is no "Us" and "Them." People are just people; fallible more often than we like. No man has perfected himself to attain to anyone's standard or idealism. We're all sinkers to some degree more than we are swimmers.

The only thing that really makes a difference is whether or not one grabs the "life ring" thrown to him/her before he/she goes down for the final time.

  • When the spiders finish building their fortresses and prepare to lay seige to the interior of my house, I know it's Autumn.

I know it's Autumn when the coyotes become more vocal in the hills outside my bedroom window.

... when my wife asks me to remove the window A/C units and store them in the garage (where the spiders have already successfully invaded.)

... when my nut brown ales in the refrigerator are replaced with Sam Adam's Octoberfest.

... when I look at my mountainbike and wonder if I'll still feel like riding it again next spring.

... when I look at my snow shovels and know I won't feel like pushing them around in the next couple of months.

...when the turning leaves reluctantly let go and surrender to the colder winds.

When an old fear begins scratching at my mind like an unwanted beast at the back door during the deep night, I know it's Autumn.

  • There's a Knock at the Door

It's that time of year again.  The door bell rings with kids at the door and candy exchanges hands.   It's not Halloween  though, because I end up with more candy in the house instead of giving it away.  Money is given and I end up eating more chocolate bars than I ought.  'Tis the season of school fundraisers.

At the end of every summer to the Christmas holiday, we probably see approximately two dozen kids who have knocked at our front door to try to sell us something so they can raise money for their school.  And I'm not talking about private schools.  They need money for the State Schools supposedly funded by our hard-earned tax dollars.

Recently we've watched our local government schools struggle with budget shortfalls, so programs are cut.  We're coming to the era when our kids won't get an education in fine arts, or have their hands on the best technology, or be able to participate in any sport (unless they are the elite athlete who can perform to bring in ticket sales for the big game).  Good teachers are frustrated, lousy teachers are taking advantage of a broken system, some administrators have learned how to compete with the fat-cattiness of most congressmen and all the while our kids are the ones who take it in the shorts.

That's why I'm not all that jazzed about a government takeover of health care.  Eventually, they won't have the cash to provide the full scope of care, just like in education.  And I'm saying this as an uninsured cancer survivor.  Believe me, I want to see improvement and reform in our health care.  I'd prefer to see it happen in the private sector because frankly, I'm dwindling in the faith to believe that any government is going to fix something by making itself larger.

When it comes to Big Government Education and Health-Care, there is probably more trick than treat.

About Me

  • I prefer brown ale over pilsner; coke before pepsi; reason over emotionalism; books before television; facts with room for imagination rather than cold, hard, and often misinterpreted data; redheads over bald girls; and oh yes - ice in my rum and coke is always better than room temperature.
